As an immigrant, I grew up hearing stories from my native Chinese culture. Aside from my parents' cooking and language, that was my only contact with that way of life. So, I understood from a very young age that myths and folklores presented different ways of understanding the world. As an artist, my work is shaped by all that I have read and heard. It is also a visual representation of what myths and fairy tales accomplish-it becomes something mysterious, yet familiar, and something understood, yet unknown.
This exhibition presents works on paper done with the simplest of materials: pencil, paper, and a little watercolor or ink. While not direct illustrations, the images are inspired by myths, fairy tales and ghost stories of various cultures.
