Media: Drawing, Architecture, Sculpture
Eggcartonopolis is a group show featuring artwork that focuses on the dialogue between artists and their environment. The show is divided into drawings and sculpture in a way that echoes the plans and models associated with architectural presentation. However, in this show the drawings and sculptures explore different aspects of the environmental experience. The drawings in the show focus on geometric ideals. The drawings depict perfect forms that share a process of mutual influence with building structures and spatial systems. Alternately, the sculptural work being exhibited in Eggcartonopolis is more concerned with the physical realities of adaptation. The scale of the show has also been reduced which entends the invitation of architectural interpretation while also clearly underlining spatial utility as an important aspect of the creative environment.
Much has been discussed about the role of the artist in the transformation and development of urban environments. The following scenario is common: Artists move into a neighborhood with cheap rents. Rents are raised in the process of gentrification and the artists move on, etc. Not as commonly discussed is the artist’s personal relationship to their environments. Nothing is mentioned of the sort of exchange that takes place between the artists themselves and the spaces and neighborhoods that they occupy. Considering the important role that artists have taken in the process of urban renewal, it would seem natural to look at the artists work in it’s constructive context. If it is possible to look at the artist as a builder of neighborhoods, than it is possible to look at the artist’s work in the context of the artist as a builder in general.
